Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask said Friday that the hip injury that hampered him throughout the playoffs will require surgery and keep him out until early 2022.

"I have a torn labrum in my hip. I'm going to do surgery," Rask said at the team's season-ending media availability. "I just don't know what the exact date is, probably within a month. I'll start the recovery process and then we'll see what the future holds after that. Hopefully the recovery goes well and I'll be ready to play hockey at some point next year."

The 2014 Vezina Trophy winner said he wants to return for a 15th season with the Bruins in 2021-22.

"I do. Mentally, I'm up for that," said Rask, who is a pending unrestricted free agent.

"The physical aspect, hopefully everything goes well. We'd probably be looking at a January or February return to hockey. That's kind the plan, and hopefully it works out."

Rask, 34, played in just 24 of Boston's 56 games during the regular season, posting a 15-5-2 record with two shutouts, a .913 save percentage and a 2.28 goals-against average.

He started all 11 playoff games for the Bruins, whose season ended in the second round Wednesday night with a 6-2 Game 6 loss to the New York Islanders. Rask allowed four goals in that game and was 6-4 in the postseason with a 2.36 GAA and a .919 save percentage.

Rask is 306-163-66 with 52 shutouts, a 2.27 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 560 games (539 starts) with Boston since making his NHL debut on Nov. 20, 2007.
