NCAA Football: Tennessee at Vanderbilt

Tennessee defensive back and Peachtree Ridge graduate Baylen Buchanan (28) defends against Vanderbilt receiver Amir Abdur-Rahman during a game last year.

Tennessee senior Baylen Buchanan, a Peachtree Ridge grad who started every football game last season at nickel back, is out indefinitely because of concerns about his spine.

Buchanan, the son of former NFL Pro Bowl defensive back Ray Buchanan, made 49 tackles last season, including three for loss, and broke up four passes.

“Baylen had a couple of issues during the offseason, and basically, we discovered that he has kind of a narrowing of the spine,” Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said at a press conference after Tuesday’s practice.

“So, for his safety and precaution, we’re holding him out. We’ve sent him to a lot of specialists across the country and just kind of waiting and gathering information.”

Buchanan has a redshirt available if needed.

“One thing you have to figure out, is this something he’s had the whole time that he’s played, or is this something that kind of happened right now,” Pruitt said. “Precautionary, we’ve held him out and we’re going to continue to do that because his safety is our first priority.”
