Former Georgia Bulldogs and NFL running back Lars Tate has died in St. Petersburg, Fla., the Georgia athletic department announced Tuesday. He was 56.
Tate was diagnosed with Stage 3 throat cancer a month ago, according to an Athens Banner-Herald report.
Tate lettered with the Bulldogs from 1984-87 and became the program’s fifth 1,000-yard rusher when he topped the mark in 1987 with 1,016 yards. He played in 42 career college games, rushing for 3,017 yards in addition to catching 40 passes for 376 yards.
The Indianapolis native was a second-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1988.
