The circumstances that led to a fatal accident that resulted in a toddler’s death near Chateau Elan on Interstate 85 on Wednesday are still being sorted out by Gwinnett County Police as they work to recreate the crash.

The interstate was closed for nearly five hours following the accident. GDOT’s 511GA website showed the accident happened between Flowery Branch Road and State Route 211 on the northbound side of I-85.

A 1-year-old child died in the accident.

“There’s nothing new on the case,” Sgt. J.R. Richter told the Daily Post on Friday. “They are still working on the reconstruction.”

The interstate was closed at about 2:17 p.m., and GDOT had told drivers that anticipated the roadway will reopen around 6:45 p.m. It turns out the agency was pretty close on that estimate.

Gwinnett County police announced on Twitter two lanes had reopened around 6:54 p.m., and then announced the interstate was fully reopened at about 7:09 p.m.

Gwinnett County Police redirected traffic to the Hamilton Mill Road exit while the interstate was closed.

Daily Post news partner FOX 5 Atlanta is reporting that multiple vehicles were involved. Other news outlets are reporting the accident involved a commercial truck and a car.

The Georgia State Patrol helped Gwinnett police in responding to the accident and handling traffic.
