The Dacula man arrested on July 4th after allegedly biting a 14-year-old Braselton girl’s buttocks while she was swimming in Lake Lanier with her family was a Gwinnett County Public Schools teacher and had previously been charged with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana, Gwinnett jail records show.
Hall County deputies charged Jonathan William Herbert, 30, with battery, felony second-degree cruelty to a child, public drunkenness and sexual battery against a child under the age of 16 after he “swam under the water and bit the girl” while she was playing in the lake by Lanier Islands on Wednesday, according to Derreck Booth, spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesman Bernard Watson confirmed that Herbert was a teacher at Snellville Middle School. He has been employed at the school since 2016.
Watson said the school district has opened an internal investigation following Herbert’s arrest.
“Herbert, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident, has no known ties to the victim or her family,” Booth said. “(The incident) was reported by people who witnessed it.”
Gwinnett County jail records show that Herbert was arrested in May 2016 and charged with DUI, speeding and possession of marijuana - less than one ounce.
Herbert bonded out of the Hall County Jail Thursday night on $6,030 bond for the most recent incident.
Booth said the case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
