Eleven Suwanee Police Department officers were recently recognized for their commitment to the department with promotions, which Police Chief Mike Jones announced Monday.

Capt. Cass Mooney was promoted to deputy chief, Sgts. Dwayne Black, Jeff Dickens and Robert Thompson were promoted to lieutenants, Cpls. Simon Byun, Kevin Skinner and Robert Stevens were promoted to sergeants, and Officers Chance Belcher, Jeff Covert, Tylon Johnson and Brody Thomas were promoted to corporals.

“I am proud of all of our officers and employees at the Suwanee Police Department,” Jones said. “I am especially honored to promote these 11 officers who have worked very hard. I wish them well in their careers, and I want to do everything I can to make each one successful.”

Mooney, who has been with the Suwanee Police Department for 21 years, has served in the patrol, communications, selective enforcement unit and administration divisions.

Dickens has served the community as a member of Suwanee police for nearly 26 years and is currently assigned to the selective enforcement unit. He has previously served in patrol and has 12 years of military experience.

Thompson joined Suwanee police in August 2006 and currently serves as the Public Information Officer, while also overseeing the criminal investigations and communications divisions.

Byun is approaching his 11th year with the department and is currently assigned to the criminal investigations division and is a member of the Special Response Team. He has also served on patrol and as an Investigator with the DEA High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force.

Skinner has been a member of the department’s patrol division for 12 years. He holds an associate degree in accounting, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public safety administration.

Stevens has served with Suwanee police for the last 10 years. He is assigned to patrol, and has worked in the criminal investigations division. He previously served as a corporal with the United States Marine Corps.

Belcher, who has been with the department for nine years, is assigned to the criminal investigations division and is a member of the special response team. He previously worked in patrol and the selective enforcement unit, and is a past recipient of the Gwinnett Valor Awards’ Merit Award.

Covert joined Suwanee police in 2017, having previously served the community as a senior deputy with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. Covert is a retired Marine Corps master sergeant.

Johnson, who has been with Suwanee police for the last year, is assigned to patrol and is a member of the special response team. He previously served as a sergeant with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, and served 11 years in the Marine Corps infantry, with deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He received an award for valor while in Iraq.

Thomas has been a Suwanee Police Department officer for nearly six years. He is assigned to patrol and is a member of the special response team. He previously worked as a dispatcher.
