Gwinnett County police said a fatal car accident killed one man and left five others injured on Sunday night on Buford Drive near Russell Road in Lawrenceville.

The accident was reported at approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The victim — Abdulmajid Khwaja, 69, of Lawrenceville — was exiting a Kroger shopping center parking lot in a white Ford Ranger attempting to cross Buford Drive. He collided with a Honda Odyssey driven by Abel Torres-Molina, 37, of Lawrenceville. Police said Khwaja failed to yield right of way and the cars collided in the right lane.

Khwaja was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.

There were a total of five people inside the Odyssey. Torres-Molina was transported to Atlanta Medical Center with a serious head injury. According to a police report, Saray Robles, 15, was transported to Atlanta Medical Center with a hand injury. Jennifer Torres, 18, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville. Jonathan Torres, 16, sustained serious injuries in the collision and was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital. Ashley Torres, 1, sustained minor injuries in the collision and was transported to Atlanta Medical Center.

Khwaja was exiting a Kroger shopping center and attempting to cross Buford Drive. The vehicles impacted in the right-hand, southbound lane of Buford Drive. Both vehicles came to rest in the southwest corner of the roadway near a guardrail in front of a child care facility. The Ford Ranger caught fire. Bystanders were able to remove Khwaja from the truck.

Police said, based on the preliminary investigation, speed and alcohol consumption do not appear to be factors in the collision.
