Police have identified a woman from Winder as the driver who died during a massive eight-vehicle wreck on Ga. Highway 316 eastbound near Buford Drive on Monday.
Eva Jones Wilkerson, 61, was in a car that officials found underneath a tractor trailer when they responded to the crash, which happened at about 3:45 p.m. Her car was on fire and she died on the scene.
Gwinnett County Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in addtion nine adults and eight children were injured in the wreck. Rutledge and Lawrenceville Police Capt. Greg Vaughan said 10 people were taken to both Gwinnett Medical Center and Children’s Healthcare of Altanta — Scottish Rite.
They said eight of those people were in moderate condition and two were critical.
Lawrenceville police responded to the scene along with the Gwinnett County Police Department and the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Lawrenceville police are in charge of investigating how the crash happened.
“They are still working on the reconstruction,” Vaughan said Tuesday afternoon. “As of now, it appears traffic came to a stop on Hi Hope Road and a tractor trailer failed to stop.”
The wreck blocked all eastbound lanes until about 9 p.m.
“It’s a mess out here,” said Vaughan said at the time. “I haven’t seen anything this bad in a while.”
