Two 23-year-olds were shot, one fatally, in a Monday evening shootout at a Lawrenceville apartment complex.

At about 8:45 p.m., a man, who is not yet being identified, was driven by a friend to the Lawrenceville Police Department after being shot in the torso, according to department spokesman Lt. Jake Parker.

“While this was occurring, our dispatchers were receiving reports of shots fired in the area of Bailey Street, which backs up to the Ashton Creek Apartments (on) New Hope Road,” Parker said. “The injured male who came to the police department indicated to officers that he was shot at Ashton Creek Apartments.”

Officers who responded to the complex found another man inside of a vehicle behind Building 3, dead.

“The male in the vehicle was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound,” Parker said. “Evidence from the parking lot and vehicle indicated that there had been an exchange of gunfire between two persons. We do not suspect that any other individuals were involved and we are not seeking additional suspects.”

Police found marijuana in the car where the dead man was found, as well as marijuana in the clothing of the man who had been brought to the police department.

He was transported by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and is recovering.

“We are not releasing names of the deceased or the injured male at this time and the investigation is continuing to determine their relationship to each other,” Parker said. “Two other vehicles were struck by gunfire and the owners are aware of the damage. Those vehicles along with the vehicle that contained the deceased male were brought to our station for evidence processing.”
