A Lawrenceville man is dead and a Norcross woman is facing DUI and first degree homicide by vehicle charges after a fatal accident on Interstate 85 near Duluth on Saturday.
Police said Norcross resident Amanda Parker, 33, failed to maintain her lane and hit a disabled vehicle that Lawrenceville resident Najee Clarke, 24, was sitting in on the shoulder of I-85 north near Pleasant Hill Road around 6 a.m. Parker reportedly hit Clarke’s car from behind.
The collision forced Clarke’s car back into a lane of traffic on the interstate, where it was hit by a tractor trailer and burst into flames.
“Although passerby were able to pull the driver of the disabled vehicle to safety, he subsequently passed away from his injuries,” police said in a statement.
Gwinnett jail records show the DUI charge against Parker is alcohol-related.
Parker was still in the Gwinnett County jail late Saturday afternoon. Jail records show that, in addition to DUI and first degree homicide by vehicle, she also faces charges of reckless driving and making an improper lane change.
Jail records show this is the seventh time Parker has been booked into the jail, but it is the first time since 2010. She faced 14 charges, including some that were drug-related, during various arrests between 2005 and 2010.
