State Sen. Renee Unterman (R-Buford) was honored recently by the Georgia Chiropractic Association for her work on legislation designed to protect children from sexual exploitation.
The group presented its Humanitarian of the Year Award to Unterman on Oct. 23, during its annual fall conference and convention in Atlanta. An announcement issued on Wednesday cited her Safe Harbor and Rachel’s Law bill which was signed into law earlier this year.
“This is a very, very special award,” Georgia Chiropractic Association legal counsel Aubrey Villines said in a statement. “All of (Sen.) Unterman’s accomplishments, before she even ever got to the legislature, are absolutely amazing. She’s just a wonderful person and we’re pleased to honor her for her work preventing sex trafficking.”
The Safe Harbor and Rachel’s Law toughens laws that deal with human trafficking, including the addition of hefty fines for adults and adult entertainment businesses who violate the law. It also lets the criminal justice system treat sexually exploited children as victims instead of criminals.
The age-based statute of limitations for sex trafficking victims was also raised from 23 to 25 under the law, which went into effect July 1.
“The issue of human trafficking is something that’s been near and dear to my heart for eight years now,” Unterman said in the association’s announcement. “At that time, Georgia was one of the worst in the nation for human trafficking and specifically for child sex trafficking. And now, we actually have other states replicating our efforts.”
The award joins a list of other accolades Unterman has accumulated during her legislative career, including two Public Health Hero awards from the Georgia Public Health Association. He list of committee assignments includes the chairmanship of the Senate’s Health and Human Services committee and Gov. Nathan Deal appointed her in September to serve on the Georgia Commission on Medical Cannabis.
Unterman is still working on addressing sexual assault issues in Georgia. Last month, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle appointed her to serve on the Interim Senate Study Committee on Sexual Assault, which will look at possible changes to improve the way assaults on college campuses are handled.
