Bear in Gwinnett photo

A bear is seen walking through a neighborhood in Lawrenceville in this 2016 file photo. On Friday, Norcross police alerted residents to be careful outside because a bear was hit on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at Holcomb Bridge Road. The bear was last seen running into a nearby wooded area.

A bear was spotted — and hit by a car — in Norcross Friday morning, according to the city’s police department.

Norcross police officials said in a Facebook post that the bear was on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard when it was hit by a vehicle at the Holcomb Bridge Road intersection. An officer who responded to the incident saw it run into a nearby wooded area.

The bear did not appear to be injured, police said, but officials are warning residents to be on the lookout and take precautions to stay safe.

“Please be aware of this incident and monitor pets accordingly,” police said. “Since the bear is in their natural habitat, the police department and the Department of Natural Resources cannot take any actions against the bear.”

Anyone who sees the bear is advised to not try to approach or catch it. Residents are encouraged to call the police department at 678-421-2040 if they have questions about how to respond to the bear.
