A popular golf entertainment brand is planning to build a location at a major yet-to-be developed mixed-use development near the Mall of Georgia in Buford, according to Gwinnett County development records.

Topgolf USA Inc. filed applications for commercial development and commercial building permits with the county’s planning and development department May 30 and 31. Records show the facility would be built at 2925 Buford Drive, putting it at the Interstate 85 and Buford Drive interchange.

Information on when the Topgolf location may begin construction or open was not available.

“We are interested in Georgia expansion, but don’t have any information to share on Buford at this time,” Topgolf spokeswoman Caroline Jerome said.

Topgolf lets customers of all ages play games of golf from elevated outdoor bays with the idea being that players earn points by hitting balls onto targets laid out on a fairway in front of them. The company’s locations also feature restaurants and bars, event rooms and lounges.

The golf entertainment complex will be part of The Exchange at Gwinnett mixed-use project that Fuqua Development is planning to develop next to the interstate and a stones throw from the Mall of Georgia.

The application Topgolf filed with the county does offer a few details about what the location would be like. Building permit application records show the golf entertainment company told the county that the facility would have 71,250 square feet and be two stories.

It would be built on 14.09 acres and have 431 parking spaces.

The fact that Topgolf is planning to build a location at The Exchange at Gwinnett is not a complete surprise. The rezoning and special use permit applications that were filed with the county last year showed a then-unnamed golf entertainment complex was planned as part of the project.

And when county commissioners voted on the applications last fall, renderings that were showed to them included buildings with features that resembled the Topgolf logo.

Earlier this year, county commissioners approved plans to develop an additional plot of land that would expand The Exchange at Gwinnett’s footprint.

Topgolf already operates locations in Atlanta and Alpharetta. It recently announced it was planning to open a location in Augusta as well.
