Tory Leroy Jones, Sr. will spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2016 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Elimisha Maryetta Gates. A jury found Jones shot Gates in the head while she slept in a Stockbridge motel.

MCDONOUGH, GA—Tory Leroy Jones, Sr. will spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2016 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Elimisha Maryetta Gates, at a Stockbridge motel.

Henry County Superior Court Judge John A. "Trea" Pipkin III sentenced Jones to life without parole plus 10 years Monday.

On Friday, a jury found Jones, 47, guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The jury found that Jones shot Gates, 40, of Porterdale, in the back of the head Aug. 22, 2016 as she slept at the Express Inn and Suites, 619 Georgia Hwy. 138 in Stockbridge, then fled to Alabama. A maintenance technician found Gates' body in the room the day after she was killed. Henry County Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Marshals captured Jones in Huntsville, Ala. on Aug. 26 after a brief standoff.

A grand jury indicted Jones in Dec. 2016. Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Henry County District Attorney Darius Pattillo said, "This was a brutal and senseless killing. I am pleased this heartless and dangerous individual will never walk the streets of Henry County or anywhere else again."

The Henry County District Attorney’s Homicide and Gang Unit, created by Pattillo in 2018, prosecuted the case.
