The consistent pushes from a variety of sports backers come to the Georgia Gwinnett College athletics office pretty regularly. Each wants to know what intercollegiate sports are up next at the college, even though the Grizzlies haven't played an official game yet.
The initial wave of sports in 2012-13 will feature baseball, men's and women's soccer, women's softball and men's and women's tennis. Basketball could be a go for 2013-14, but those involved locally with other sports want to know when lacrosse, wrestling, swimming and any other sport you can think of will join them. Don't expect football to happen any time soon, though.
That said, here's an idea. What about GGC men's and women's golf teams? I know golf can be expensive with its travel to tournaments, but it seems like the Grizzlies could have a nice home base at Collins Hill Golf Club.
GGC accepted a similar property gift from the GGC Foundation earlier this year when it acquired the top-notch Collins Hill Tennis Center. Now the school will have one of the region's top college tennis centers.
What if the school found a way to take over Collins Hill Golf Club, too? It would be a great training tool and a home course located ultra-close to campus. It would be another great boost to a rapidly growing GGC campus.
Also taxpayers would be thrilled to shed the county-owned course, which has struggled financially since it was initially purchased by Gwinnett in 1988. It was considered one of the area's best courses when I was growing up — then it was called Springbrook Country Club — and still has great potential.
If the team was based out of Collins Hill, it could still take advantage of a Gwinnett area filled with plenty of golfing options.
But like I said, a college golf team is an expensive undertaking. We'll have to wait and see if that sport is even an option for the Grizzlies.
