WILL'S WORLD: False Simpson rumor spreads wildly

Thanks to modern technology and the Internet, it doesn't take rumors long to spread. Just ask Buford.

Blogs, message boards and other websites have blown up this week with reports that successful Wolves head coach Jess Simpson was taking a job with the Clemson football program. Clemson websites even began speculating on what job Simpson was taking.

The only problem - none of it was true.

"We couldn't believe how that took off in the last two days that Jess was going to Clemson," said Buford athletic director Dexter Wood, who added that the rumor started from an online story from what he called "a bogus or maybe real" South Hall Gazette story. He said nobody had Buford had ever heard of the South Hall Gazette covering Buford stories.

Wood confirmed that Simpson - who has seven state titles at Buford, four as head coach and three as Wood's defensive coordinator - is still Buford's coach and hasn't pursued any college jobs.

"The bottom line is Jess hasn't talked to anyone at Clemson and doesn't even know anybody there to talk to if he wanted to," Wood said. "For that matter, he hasn't talked to anybody about any other jobs. He's the head coach at Buford High School."

While Simpson is staying put, there will be a major coaching change within the Buford staff announced very soon.

Stay tuned for that one. Which will be true.
