December 31, 2012
Well it is New Year’s Eve and it is time to reflect on the year that was in entertainment. Below I have picked a few of my favorite things from 2012.
In Movies I love a good action movie and 2012 was full of good ones. My favorite though is a tie between “The Avengers” and “Skyfall.”
“The Avengers” was great. Fun, well-written and humorous, it had everything I like in a superhero movie, including wise-cracking Robert Downey Jr.
“Skyfall” might be the best Bond film I have seen since Roger Moore played the part. It had just the right amount of humor, a great villain, one of the best explosions I have seen on the big screen and a few homages to past Bonds.
Honorable Mentions: “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Cabin in the Woods,” “Hunger Games” and “Silver Linings Playbook.”
In DVDs My favorite DVD that came out this year is actually a set of DVDs. If you know my favorite movie of all-time, then you can probably guess what it is. It’s “Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures” box set on Blu-ray. It has all four of the Indy movies, yes including the sill “Crystal Skull,” and a disc with tons of bonus features. The “Raiders” (my favorite movie of all-time) transfer looks amazing and is worth the set alone. It is so pretty and crisp.
In TV This year was a good year for TV as well. It was the year I discovered “Downton Abbey,” watched the first season of “Homeland” and got caught up with “Breaking Bad.” Great television all three. Picking a favorite of those is tough but I think I have to go with “Downton Abbey.” It has great characters, romance, sadness, intrigue and humor and it is gorgeous to watch. I cannot wait for it to start next weekend with the addition of Shirley MacLaine to banter with Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess.
Honorable Mentions: “Mad Men,” the Christmas episode of “New Girl,” “Ben and Kate,” “The Mindy Project” episode where she goes to the high school, the proposal episode of “Parks and Rec,” and sadly “Last Resort,” which was canceled and only has a few episodes left.
On the Internet I have decided my favorite twitterer (is that what we call people who tweet?) is Food Network’s chef Alton Brown at @AltonBrown. The UGA grad dispenses food advice on adorable Post-its with humor and illustrations. Follow him, you won’t be sorry especially if you like food.

"Cabin in the Woods" was great. It was like one of those "choose your own adventure" books in movie form.
