December 30, 2011
As 2011 winds to a close, I find myself looking back at this year's crop of movies.
I haven't watched a whole lot from this year, which is unusual for me, but maybe that is because I haven't really been all that impressed with the ones I have watched.
Now before you tell me there were lots of great movies this year, I like to wait until the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tells me which ones it thinks are the best. Oscar nominations come out Jan. 24, so that gives me a month (the Oscars are Feb. 26 this year) to get in all the good movies. I know the Golden Globes are sooner but after they gave the award to “The Kids are Alright” in a comedy or musical, I can no longer trust them. That movie was in no way a comedy or a musical and I thought it was just OK.
I don't discriminate, I watch bad movies and good ones. This year, though, I haven't been wowed by any movies. I'm hoping that with awards season coming up, I'll watch one that does.
So here are all the 2011 movies I have watched and how they rank from best to worst.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” – Great book, really good movie
“Attack the Block” – Aliens land in the sketchy part of London and a gang of teens fight back. It is pretty funny and thrilling. Watch it with the subtitles on
“Bridesmaids” – The funniest movie of the year
“Limitless” – Surprisingly good action thriller
“X-Men: First Class” – This was so good, it made me forget “X-Men: The Last Stand.” The best of the comic book character movies this year
“The Muppets” – Who doesn't love the Muppets?
“Crazy, Stupid, Love.” – Nice mix of comedy and drama. Loved Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in it
“Captain America: The First Avenger” — This one had a pretty good plot.
“Super 8” – I really liked this movie until the last 15 minutes.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” – Always fun to watch Captain Jack
“The Hangover II” – Same formula as the first one, funny but not as funny as the first one
“Water for Elephants” – The book was better, but this wasn't bad. Nice to see Robert Pattinson with some color to his skin
“No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits” – Pretty much the same movie, good until the writers break up the couple over something stupid.
“Arthur” – Gets bonus points for Helen Mirren
“Dylan Dog: Dead of Night” – Trying to cash in on the comic book/supernatural wave. I got bored with this one halfway in.
“Your Highness” – I wanted this to be funny, but it wasn't, and I fell asleep in the middle of it
“Sucker Punch” – The plot was confusing and I didn't care for any of the characters
“The Green Hornet” – I would have rather this movie been just about Kato.
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” – I didn't like the book, so I didn't have high hopes for this movie and it was still the worst thing I saw all year. I hated almost every minute of it except for The Features' song “From Now On” from the soundtrack
What were your favorite or least favorite movies of this year?
