Nash calls someone else hypocritical...really? How's the search going for a new Director? What ever happened to the report the Commissioners paid for...the Ivy Group. It would be interesting to see how much they paid the Ivy Group, how much they are going to pay to find a new Director and let's toss in the package to get rid of the former Director. Love the comments by Kevin and Say_What! Keep digging Camie...
I don't know if this comment will make it or not because several others have been censored. You need to look closely at this library board. This is politics at its worst. Charlotte Nash is the driving force behind this...political payback for the Dacula situation. You know, years ago, every commissioner promised a library their every corner. Well, they got that and then the fund dried up. Rather than supporting the library, they are playing politics and usualy. There is so much political inbreeding in this situation that no one of any integrity wants to touch it...except maybe Deborah Oscarson and Suzanne. Yes, Suzanne voted to oust Ms. Kellam, but don't you folks see...this is much bigger than that. It is about your government and your right to read what you want. I don't think either Ms. Pinder or Ms. Kellam deserved they way they were dismissed nor do I think we deserve to pick up the bill for the board's inability to work with the directors. Why can't they get folks on the board who are qualified and stop stacking the deck with former employees (phyllis oxendine) and other folks with higher political ambitions. I have a feeling that some money will magically appear in an attempt to make Dick Goodman look like it was the right move and he's a hero...he can expand hours and make the public think he has all the answers. Think again. I hope this comment gets posted. Let's see. If not, shame on you Post for censoring comments opposed to your views.
The old dude's name is Dick Goodman. He is on the Suwanee City Council. If you want to see a vision of the library with him in charge, check out his twitter. He reinvented himself in 2006...needs to try again because he didn't get it right. Read the Duluth's Patch and Richard/Florence's comments. I can't top that; however, I do believe that this goes much higher. Ms. Kellam dared to have vision and keep the entire county in mind. This is clearly politically payback. I guess our library system will be determined by Cobb County now. Why didn't Ms. Nash ever mention that another nearby county adopted the computer lab/holds idea? Oh, that's right, her daughter works for Cobb County as a librarian. Please, please someone step up to the plate and run again these commissioners. Also, let's get Mr. Goodman out of office. Charlotte should have stayed in retirement. Lord knows we paid her enough when she was the county administrator. Why isn't the Post doing an investigation on this? Three of the board members should not have even been on the board at the time this mockery went down. Dig deeper and you'll find a great story. Can't wait to see the payoff at the Board Meeting on Monday night!!!!!Sorry, Dick but this will not make you look good.
Well, I must admit that I once thought the same thing; however, I am very afraid after looking at many, many of the facts surrounding this library situation that she is not the person I thought her to be. What happened to the report from the Ivy Consulting Group? Why did she appoint someone to the library board who appears not to like the public library? There are others who love Gwinnett County also and it is our home. We elected her to clean up a bad situation. Her appointee would not make a move without her approval and the whole situation stinks of political games. Well, on the bright side, Gwinnett will be in the news again and on the brighter side, this simply reinforces my plans to move out of the county. I'm not the only one who has had enough. Shame on all of you who participated in this witch hunt!
Thank you for that information. It certainly makes sense. What does not make sense is that it is being installed on non-emergency vehicles and will be utilized to monitor employees activities. Try investing in people and use technology to benefit those individuals rather than putting GPS in all vehicles. I maintain, tax dollars at waste.
Veryconcernedcitizen...Amen to that! I'd be willing to be that she is fulfilling political promises to the Dacula group and then she's using her own puppets to do her dirty work. Why can't they find a group of honest individuals who truly want to see our library continue to grow and give good service. It's in the best interest of everyone to support the library rather than destory it. I wonder if they already have someone ready to slide into this position. Another political favor probably. God help the employees. Hey, did you know they are putting GPS systems on all the county vehicles. Then they can hire someone else to monitor those. Yep, our county dollars at waste compliments of the BOC!
Really, you really think that BOC doesn't have a say in who is appointed the Library Director. Their puppets on the Library Board don't make a move without their approval. I hope someone like Dale Russell gets involved and let's throw all the dirty laundry out on the table.
Let's agree to disagree on this one...I believe Ms. Kellam is being made the scapegoat for the county and for economic crisis that has hit our entire nation. She has been an advocate for library services for everyone, not just an entitled few. I believe Ms. Nash purposely appointed Dick Goodman who was involved with Engage Gwinnett to get rid of Ms. Kellam. Neither the county employees nor library employees have had a raise in 6 years, yet you still get your items. The county/board determines the raises, not Ms. Kellam. The voters wanted a library in every community and that is what they were given. It is not Ms. Kellam's fault that the funding dried up. I believe if you speak with someone at their HQ, they can explain that they have been examining and implementing new staffing models over the past few years...all with the thought of trying to provide service with less money. I believe this goes back to the suggestion that the Dacula Branch be renovated and different type of service (computer lab) be offered. I guess the rest of the county is to suffer because they didn't want to drive an extra 6 miles even though they would have a great lab for everyone. The firing of JoAnn Pinder was done very poorly and it looks like they are out to try to do it again. Did we ever finish paying off Ms. Pinder's package. While the system is not perfect, I sure hate to see Gwinnett County become the scene of national coverage because of a witch hunt. Honesty, integrity...I don't think so. Looks like Gwinnett County is still part of the good, old boy system and political promises have already been broken.
I've watched the situation at the library evolve over many years and would like to make a couple of points. It is not the Library Director who determines if staff get raises. That decision is made by the Library Board. I have followed Mr. Goodman's tenure on the library board with great interest. Am I the only person in Gwinnett County who sees a conflict of interest between his position on the Suwanee City Council and the Gwinnett Library Board? If a decision is made to close a branch, I'd be willing to bet that he'd protect his Suwanee branch. Seems like the commissioners continue to appoint people who have their own agendas rather than the interest of the library and ALL of the citizens of Gwinnett County. I am disgusted with his comment, "Is it what they need or what they want?" Sounds like Mr. G. wants to dictate what we will read. I also find it interesting to note that while the employees have not received a raise in 6 years, Mr. Goodman appears to want to get rid of items in the library that are for entertainment. The library has absorbed every cut to date and in spite of the board, the employees continue to deliver excellent service and tighten their belts. The Commissioners should give a little more thought into who they appoint and if the board members truly have an interest in a PUBLIC library system or if they have their own agenda. I went back and looked at old minutes on the web site and there was one board member who rarely shows up and she was re-elected. This system supports everyone in the county from young to old without bias. Kudos to the library staff for maintaining the services in spite of the lack of support.
Denise, you are to be commended for supporting your step-father, Dick Goodman. Both Mr. Saxton and Mr. Goodman are also to be commended for serving on the library board during such challenging times. While both have points that are certainly credible, it is sad to see this being played out in the press rather than Board Meetings. Mr. Saxton appears to have a viable plan that will allow the library to grow. I'm not sure what Mr. Goodman's plan is except to continue chipping away at materials, staff, and services. It may be necessary to cut hours. However, Mr. Saxton's plan appears to have more vision.
