I too hope this is TEMPORARY. Each director of the Gwinnett Library needs to be replaced! When hours and budget were cut, were there ever any library layoffs? NO
The children got hurt in the process not being able to get books they needed for summer reading; adults could not get their Harlequin novels; yet when the Library was open 10am-3pm the same number of staff manned the library desk.
And I am tired of waiting 45 minutes for a computer when people OUT OF COUNTY are still receiving FREE library computer passes.
$121,414 severance package would buy a lot of books!!! Stanbery-Kellam should not accept this! She wanted to turn libraries soley into computer work stations; what was she thinking??
Close the libraries that are 3 miles away from each other and save the county $180,000 to $300,000 a year. then there will be more money for staff, materials, and longer hours.
Gwinnett does not need 16 libraries. 12 would do. Everyone has been down sizing from retail stores to government departments. It's about time libraries did the same.
Check out Patron Profiles In the August/Sept of Library Journal. It even says teens are less likely to even "want" to go to the library anymore. And the truth is the librarians don't have more work to do; very few actually get asked "research" type questions. The majority of the questions are where is the bathroom? How do I get on the internet? How do I print this page? It would be nice if the library ACTUALLY taught computer classes. It is very frustrating as an older woman to always ask a librarian how to do something on the computer. The library is the place where computer classes should be taught.
