Teachers were furloughed Oct. 8th (two more furlough days are scheduled for 2012 and one in 2013). That means we didn't get to work, and we didn't get paid. This isn't a Christmas bonus or a pay raise. The board of education is basically giving us back the money we normally would have earned had that day not been removed from the school calendar. As for the timing of it, the tax payers' money we are being paid can be taxed this year to help fund 2013. The board of education cannot give money to the police dept., sheriff's dept., or fire dept.
Thank you! I am grateful for whatever GCPS gives me. I make less now than I did seven years ago, and I work much longer hours because we've lost so many teachers and support staff. My family barely gets by each month. I hope the public will not begrudge us this small token.
