YARBROUGH: Junior E. Lee thinks he has identified the next president as...

Junior says there is groundswell for a consensus candidate that will unite all of the middle-of-the-road Americans who are equally turned off by liberal weenies and right-wing whackos.

My tryout for 'Jeopardy' a few years ago was a disaster.

Darrell Huckaby: Romney all wrong in his attitude toward the South

I could forgive Romney for flaunting his wealth and for telling lies about Newt. I cannot forgive him for the condescending attitude he has taken toward my fellow Southerners.

This weekend I will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of my 10th birthday.

PARKER: Rush muddies the waters, should apologize to student

Who'd have thought that Rush Limbaugh would become the great uniter in this divisive political season? Indeed, he has united decent people of all stripes and persuasions with his vile remarks about a Georgetown Law student.

If you are familiar with Paula Deen's recipes you know that she likes to cook with butter. Lots and lots of butter. What's wrong with that?

Tease photo

DARRELL HUCKABY: Capt. Schettino off course in more ways than one

Tease photo

HUCKABY: Mistletoe and magnolia: Hallmarks of a Southern Christmas

Just what makes an ideal Southern Christmas?

HUCKABY: Recipe award will be among the most cherished

I watch the classic Jimmy Stewart movie every year about this time, but I don’t need Clarence the guardian angel to remind me that I’ve had a wonderful life. When I was growing up in the little mill village of Porterdale, wearing the same pair of overalls every day and digging for doodle bugs under the house, I could never have dreamed of the places I would have been and the roads I would have traveled by this point in my life.

HUCKABY: When the news is bad, just keep on going

I woke up Thursday morning with an appetite for some good news — which has been a rare commodity these days. I turned on the coffee pot, as is my custom, and the dog and I walked up our long driveway to pick up the morning papers. I could hardly wait to spread them both out — our local tome as well as the big city offering — and find something to lift my spirits.

HUCKABY: When the news is bad, just keep on going

It's time we woke up to some good news in the morning.

Tease photo

HUCKABY: This Montezuma lady really knows how to kill a party

Weekend plans sometimes come to a screeching halt.

Tease photo

HUCKABY: Some dares ought not be taken

I have been accused, from time to time, of being a wild and crazy guy, if I may borrow a phrase from the classic Steve Martin Saturday Night Live skits of a bygone day. At least I was in my younger days. I have done some pretty stupid things on a dare. I would tell you about a few of them, except my children read this column from time to time and I’m not sure how long the statute of limitations is on some of the stuff I did, particularly while I was a college student at UGA.

HUCKABY: Nothing better than a return engagement

It's time once again for the Taste of Home Cooking Show.

HUCKABY: Fall a good time for a little 'sole-searching'

One of the joys of autumn, when I was growing up, was going shoe shopping. I’m not making this up y’all. I looked forward to getting those back-to-school shoes each September. For one thing, I had gone barefoot all summer. It is one thing to wax nostalgic about a shoeless summer — “blessings on thee, little man; barefoot boy with cheeks of tan,” and all that. The reality of a barefoot summer, however, included stubbed toes, hot sidewalks and sandspurs — not to mention dog poop between the toes.

HUCKABY: Fall a good time for a little 'sole-searching'

Pitch in for the "Lose Your Sole" drive. You'll be glad you did.

HUCKABY: Happy birthday to the legendary Larry Munson

Larry Munson -- still the best of the best.

HUCKABY: A reminder of what true courage is

For most of my life I have seemed to have a nearly indelible memory -- at least in some areas. Ask me about a random conversation I had with a buddy on the playground in 1962 and I can tell you virtually everything that was said. If, on the other hand, you ask me what my lovely wife Lisa asked me to pick up at the grocery store last night ... well -- I might be a bit fuzzy on that.

HUCKABY: The once (and future?) wedding photographer

The voice on the other end of the line sounded so innocent and sincere that I almost said yes without thinking.

Huckaby: Take Time To Remember Those Who Sacrificed

With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation’s very fabric approaching I became curious as to what, exactly, I had written in my first column after the attacks. I have had a couple of computers crash since that time, and I’m not real good at backing up my work, so I made a rare visit to the newspaper office to take a look at my column.

Darrell Huckaby: Some important lessons you don't learn in school

I'm a big fan of higher education. I have a couple of degrees. My son is making a career of college and my youngest daughter is in her second year. Their big sister earned a doctorate from UGA Like I said, I believe in higher education.

HUCKABY: Pat Summitt -- the best at what she does

She was still Pat Head when we first met. I had just secured a job coaching girls basketball, of all things. It took. I did it until 2002. But this would be my first rodeo, so to speak, so I began looking around for a clinic geared toward the women's game, which was only a few years removed from six-on-six and rovers.

HUCKABY: Country music lyrics ring true

I have learned over the past couple of weeks, that there is only so much television a man can watch -- particularly before football season starts. Lingering pain from my recent surgery has made concentration difficult, so I haven't been able to do a lot of reading. I have often turned to music to fill the void in my long lonely days.

HUCKABY: Random encounters can sometimes change lives

Fate is a fickle dance partner and if you believe you can predict what life will bring your way when you wake up each morning, you just haven't been paying attention. The nuances of everyday life seem so random at times. We never know when a chance encounter will develop into a long and lasting friendship, and since the world is so interconnected these days, we can seldom imagine how wide a network a relationship with a solitary person might eventually create.

HUCKABY: Singing for Kay Starr's birthday

While leisurely perusing the newspaper Thursday morning -- one of my last chances to take my time doing so before the new school year begins -- I noticed a small blurb proclaiming that Kay Starr was celebrating her 89th birthday and was shocked to learn that Kay Starr is still alive.

HUCKABY: I'm looking forward to our version of football

In most of the world they call it football -- which is quite reasonable, since there is so much emphasis on the participants' feet. If you want to actually touch the ball with your hand you have to wear a gaudy long-sleeved jersey that's nothing like the ones your teammates sport. Here in the American South only football is called football. To us, what the elite women athletes of the world are playing this month is soccer -- albeit soccer on a big stage.

HUCKABY: Not without my iPod

Have you ever been estranged from a close friend? Of course you have. It’s not a good feeling is it? Think Sonny without Cher or Huntley without Brinkley. Sonny and Cher were quite infamously estranged, of course. If Huntley and Brinkley ever were I knew nothing about it — their names are just permanently intertwined in my mind.

HUCKABY: Hope National Day of Prayer catches on

I get a chance to travel around the country a good bit — speaking to various groups who at least pretend to enjoy what I have to say. I almost always enjoy the events and I especially enjoy meeting the folks who attend. Usually my only task is make to folks laugh — something I truly enjoy doing. But once in a great while the job takes a little bit of a serious turn, and sometimes I am asked to speak on a particular subject. I actually have to prepare for these gigs.

HUCKABY: Mother nature shows us her deadly power

Mama was always afraid of a storm. My daddy worked the second shift at the mill so whenever it would “come up a bad cloud” at night, my sister and I would huddle in the living room with my mother, candles and matches and a battery-powered transistor radio at hand — just in case the power went out — and help her worry.
