Swim and Dive Roundup: Hernandez repeats as Gwinnett champ
Wesleyan junior Zach Hernandez repeated as champion of the Gwinnett Invitational diving this past weekend.
Hernandez won the boys division with an All-American score of 444.35 points, defeating runner-up and fellow All-American Seth Burgmeier of Mill Creek. Burgmeier had 389.40 points.

Wesleyan junior Zach Hernandez repeated as champion of the Gwinnett Invitational diving this past weekend.
Hernandez won the boys division with an All-American score of 444.35 points, defeating runner-up and fellow All-American Seth Burgmeier of Mill Creek. Burgmeier had 389.40 points.
Collins Hill’s Bradley Miller was third (328.45), Brookwood’s Garrett Boss was fourth (308.40) and Norcross’ Richard Krause was fifth (289.15). Dacula’s Hunter Ferrer (286.30), Parkview’s Rory Martin (285.20) and Brookwood’s Taylor Brown (274.80) rounded out the top eight in boys competition.
The top local girls finisher was Sara Halliburton of Duluth. She was third overall at 360.45 points.
Grayson’s Darcie O’Brien (fourth, 358.30), Parkview’s Tabitha Banks (fifth, 352.55) and Peachtree Ridge’s Emily Yoder (sixth, 323.65) were close behind. Brookwood’s duo of Jessica Tailhardat (309.10) and Chloe Cotter (307.70) finished in seventh and eighth, respectively.
SWIMMING/DIVING
Mill Creek wins tri-meet
Mill Creek won a three-team meet this past weekend against Grayson and Shiloh. The Hawks had 588 points to Grayson’s 430 and Shiloh’s 174.
First-place finishers for Mill Creek were: Parker Schwab (200 freestyle, 1 minute, 54.64 seconds and 100 butterfly, 1:00.21), Rachael Dudley (200 free, 1:54.65), Chase Wilson (200 individual medley, 2:12.90), Frederique Lefebvre (200 IM, 2:16.64), Chris Powell (50 free, 22.77 and 100 free, 50.75), Samantha Akoubian (50 free, 26.35), Sommers Creed (100 fly, 1:00.54 and 100 backstroke, 1:01.71), Kevin White (500 free, 5:11.63), Katie Evans (500 free, 5:24.15 and 100 breaststroke, 1:07.65) and Michael Grimaldi (100 breast, 1:07.79).
Eagles defeat Dacula
Collins Hill was victorious in boys (231-72) and girls (206-67) competition this past weekend against Dacula.
Event winners for the Eagles were: Patrick McGinty (200 free, 1:57.12 and 500 free, 5:18.59), Justin Robinson (200 IM, 2:10.30), Carl Anderson (50 free, 22.59 and 100 free, 50.37), Wesley Poss (100 fly, 57.07), Skyler Carroll (100 back, 59.99), William Callander (100 breast, 1:09.59), Anna Burdette (200 free, 2:08.27), Jackie Rajek (50 free, 26.30), Christie Behning (diving, 160.00), Lindsey Wacker (100 fly, 1:08.74), Kayla Floor (100 free, 57.10 and 100 back, 1:08.39) and Emelia Johnson (500 free, 6:27.68).
North first in tri-meet
North Gwinnett won the boys and girls competitions during a tri-meet this past weekend with Peachtree Ridge and Central Gwinnett.
North won 289-232 over the Peachtree Ridge girls and then beat the Lion boys 272-234. Central scored 103 girls points and 100 boys points.
North’s first-place finishers were: Mike Peribonio (200 free, 1:47.90 and 100 back, 55.66), Caroline Kenney (200 free, 2:06.24 and 100 back, 1:05.45), Eric Madden (50 free, 22.16 and 100 fly, 54.03), Elizabeth Webster (50 free, 26.00), Allison Carr (100 free, 55.20 and 100 breast, 1:08.08) and Bailee McKillip (500 free, 5:59.80).
Kenney won the 200 free despite swimming the event as a 200 backstroke. North’s 200 medley relay of Peribonio, Kyle McLeod, Madden and Christian Thompson set a school record at 1:41.69.
Peachtree Ridge’s 200 medley won in 1:40.52, the fastest time in that event by a GCPS team this season. The winning foursome featured John Simmons, Bryce BeVier, Luke Upchurch and Bradley Faxon.
Peachtree Ridge got wins from: BeVier (200 IM, 1:58.05), Christina Wang (200 IM, 2:17.59), Michael Russell (diving, 209.30), Emily Yoder (diving, 236.40), Hannah Burke (100 fly, 1:03.43), Simmons (100 free, 48.70), Faxon (500 free, 4:54.22) and Upchurch (100 breast, 1:02.42).
The Lions followed the tri-meet up with a loss to Greater Atlanta Christian the following day. Upchurch (50 free, 22.37 and 100 fly, 54.00), BeVier (100 breast, 1:01.81), Wang (100 back, 1:02.01) and Hannah Burke (100 breast, 1:12.04 and 200 IM, 2:16.95) had first-place finishes in that meet.
Duluth boys, girls win
Both Duluth teams finished first last weekend in a quad-meet with Loganville, Berkmar and Meadowcreek. The Wildcats beat runner-up Loganville in both — 220-92 in boys and 224-131 in girls.
Event winners for Duluth were: Austin Goelz (200 free, 1:54.00), Hailey White (200 free, 1:53.41 and 500 free, 5:05.33), Paul Leddon (200 IM, 2:04.87 and 500 free, 4:54.12), Amy Nicholas (200 IM, 2:34.47 and 100 fly, 1:07.61), Young Jeong (50 free, 23.58), Sara Halliburton (50 free, 27.87 and diving, 305.55), Kenny Chan (100 breast, 1:09.69) and Emily Nicholas (1:19.45).
Norcross tops Central
Norcross was first in both divisions against Central Gwinnett this past weekend, winning 177-83 in girls and 186-66 in boys.
The Blue Devils’ event winners were: Catie Richardson (200 free, 2:28.74), Janelle Spanjers (200 IM, 2:26.38 and 100 breast, 1:14.08), Montgomery Tardy (50 free, 23.32), Meghan Feeney (50 free, 26.73 and 100 free, 58.87), Chelsea Dunn (100 fly, 1:08.21), Conrad Helms (100 free, 54.40), Todd Brannon (500 free, 5:21.30), Erin Bagent (100 back, 1:08.87) and Erick Holmquist (100 breast, 1:09.71).
Central got first-place finishes from: Jeffrey Griffiths (200 free, 1:55.58 and 100 back, 1:00.83), Peter Maliszewski (diving, 139.70) and Taylor Hubbard (diving, 160.50).
Wesleyan sweeps Northview
The Class A Wesleyan teams swept AAAAA Northview this past weekend, winning 172.5-136.5 in boys and 161-153 in girls competition.
The Wolves broke two school records in the meet, including a six-dive mark of 328.10 by Zach Hernandez. The 400 free relay of Chase Bartlett, Nick Salyers, Michael Reynolds and Anthony McMurry topped the school record with a time of 3:16.98.
Wesleyan’s other event winners were: McMurry (50 free, 22.64), Lauren Hall (diving, 278.50), Salyers (100 free, 49.27), Kailee Trum (100 free, 57.81) and Reynolds (500 free, 4:46.27).
