FOOD FOR THOUGHT: How on earth did we raise our children?

I have been invited to a baby shower. I haven’t figured out yet whether I’m excited or dreading it. It’s been a few years since I’ve been to one and even then, I felt so out of touch with what’s going in the baby world these days. Truth: I felt like a dinosaur. How on earth did I raise my children without all the gadgets and contraptions on the market today?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Quitting smoking takes time, patience

Lisa* is a good friend of mine. She quit smoking Friday afternoon at about 3 p.m. I know this, because she called me around 4 this morning to tell me the exact number of hours and minutes since she made that decision. She awoke from a dead sleep, sweating and craving the insidious coffin nails that have ensnared so many of us over the years. While my first instinct was to reproach Lisa for calling at that indecent hour, empathy stopped me in my tracks. I was in her shoes about 10 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: What might Georgia's HB 87 mean for Gwinnett?

House Bill 87 went into effect on July 1 here in Georgia. An attempt to crack down on illegal immigration, this controversial legislation has spurred marches, calls for boycotts and, some say, racial division. Georgia is experiencing some of the same blowback that Arizona did when state lawmakers passed similar legislation, but the questions remain: Is HB 87 necessary? Is it morally sound? Is it legally sound? Will the bill accomplish what lawmakers intended?
