Georgia Certificate of Need law facing challenge

Two Cartersville doctors file suit claiming law is unconstitutional on state and federal grounds

The law requires health care providers to seek permission from DCH before expanding health care practices or buying certain equipment. Two doctors were recently denied permission to expand their outpatient surgery center by adding another operating room for scheduling flexibility, and allowing other surgeons to use the facility when it is not in use.

The percentage of restaurants and bars in Georgia that allowed smoking rose from 9.1 percent in 2006 to 17.6 percent in 2012, according to a study published last month in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease: Public Health Research, Practice and Policy.

Former patient helps out at free dental clinic

Doug Taffe of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., traveled hundreds of miles north to central Georgia over the weekend to work as a volunteer at a free dental clinic. His volunteer stint at the event in Perry was a form of repayment.
