LAWRENCEVILLE — Rodney Alan Kimsey II was formally arrested Friday afternoon, two days after police believe he shot and killed his wife inside their Hoschton home.
Kimsey — who was detained shortly after the incident early Wednesday morning and had been in the hospital since — was booked into the Gwinnett County jail just before 4 p.m. Friday. He is charged with felony murder and aggravated assault and is being held without bond.
Gwinnett County police responded to Kimsey’s home on Platinum Drive at about 4:35 a.m. Wednesday after his 13-year-old daughter called to 911 to report that her mother had been shot.
Melissa Kimsey, 30, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was deceased at the scene. The girl was not physically harmed.
Authorities detained Rodney Kimsey, 31, several houses down the street from his home. According to police, he was knocking on doors and “spouting unintelligible things” and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
After being apprehended, Rodney Kimsey was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for evaluation. It was believed he stayed there until he was booked into jail Friday afternoon, though the nature of his treatment was unclear.
A potential motive in the shooting is unclear as well. Police officials said the department did not have any previous “interactions of note” with the couple, which had lived in their subdivision near Little Mulberry Park since 2007. A neighbor told the Daily Post that the family was under financial stress, an assertion backed up by recent court filings.
Visitation for Melissa Kimsey will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home, located at 5051 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Peachtree Corners. Her obituary described her as “a loving mother, daughter, and friend to many.”
