NORCROSS — Gwinnett County Police have charged a Norcross woman in Thursday morning’s fatal crash on Interstate 85 northbound between Beaver Ruin Road and Steve Reynolds Blvd.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Ed Ritter said Maria Catalina Zeeyala Torres, 44, driving a red Honda Odyssey, merged from the second right lane into a lane where Eric Murray, 39, of Minneapolis was driving a tractor-trailer. Both vehicles lost control and slid off to the right side of the road, Ritter said.

The crash, which happened just after 7 a.m., caused traffic delays for several hours during the investigation.

Murray died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, while Torres and tractor-trailer passenger Bryant Garrott, 62, of Minneapolis, were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Because the police investigation determined Torres was at fault in the crash, she was charged with second degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain her lane and not having a driver’s license. Gwinnett jail records also show Torres has an immigration hold, and remained in jail on Friday morning on a $19,718 bond.
