As the Gwinnett Braves kick off their sixth season in Gwinnett, officials will break ground on a project around the Lawrenceville-area stadium.

An April 11 groundbreaking ceremony is planned for The Views, the first phase of a long-awaited mixed-use development surrounding the Ga. Highway 20 venue. The ceremony will take place about an hour before the Triple-A team’s home opener.

Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau officials said during a meeting Wednesday that the high-rise residential project is expected to take about a year and is not expected to interfere with this season’s baseball games. By the 2015 season, the project should be near completion.

“It’s real exciting, what is happening,” said Stan Hall of the Gwinnett Sports Commission, adding that construction crews have already begun grading the site just past the right-field fence.

Also Wednesday, the GCVB board learned that a deal to build a headquarters hotel at the Arena at Gwinnett Center is continuing to move through the legal process.

Officials said county attorneys are continuing to work on the proposal, and the Gwinnett Development Authority will soon schedule a vote to transfer bonds issued in 2010 for a nearby project to the Gwinnett Center site.
