PREP ROUNDUP: Baca goes all nine innings in North baseball win over Norcross

NORCROSS — Tucker Baca of North Gwinnett pitched nine innings on Monday night as the Bulldogs outlasted Norcross for a 3-1 win in Region 7-AAAAAA baseball action.

Baca (3-2) allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.

The Bulldogs (9-3, 4-0) pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth. Devin Mitchell drove in Ben Carswell on a sacrifice fly for the first one, while Zach Tindol, who finished 2-for-4, plated Robert Pucciarello with an RBI single. Avery Kenyon also finished the night 2-for-4 for North.

Norcross (8-5, 1-2) received a solid start from Graeme Stinson, who went six innings with one run on two hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. The loss went to Trevor Craport, who logged two innings of relief with two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Mike Perez led the offense for the Blue Devils with a single and a double.


Collins Hill 3, Mountain View 0

SUWANEE — Monty Horn controlled the Mountain View bats Monday night, pitching Collins Hill to a 3-0 win in Region 7-AAAAAA play.

Horn pitched all seven scoreless innings on just 66 pitches. He allowed only four hits and had three strikeouts.

Seven different Collins Hill players had hits, including doubles by Riley King and William Holland. The Eagles pushed across two runs in the third inning and one more in the fifth on a wild pitch, handing Mountain View its first region loss.

Mill Creek 15, Meadowcreek 0

HOSCHTON — Mill Creek evened its Region 7-AAAAAA record at 2-2 on Monday night with a 15-0 win in four innings over Meadowcreek.

Kyle Abernathy led the offense for the Hawks (6-8 overall) by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Walker Boyd and Beau Brundage each went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs.

Cameron Turley was the winning pitcher, going four innings with no runs, three hits and five strikeouts.

South 6, Central 3

LAWRENCEVILLE — Chad Smith of South Gwinnett pitched six strong innings on Monday night as the Comets topped Central Gwinnett 6-3.

Smith allowed three unearned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts, while Dominique Jackson retired the side in the seventh with two strikeouts for the save.

Smith also had a double and two RBIs to lead the offense, while Jackson went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Morgan Miller (2-for-4) and Seth Johnston (1-for-3) also helped as the Comets improved to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in Region 8-AAAAAA.

Archer 10, Berkmar 1

LILBURN — Archer’s offense collected 13 hits on Monday night as the Tigers topped Berkmar 10-1 in Region 8-AAAAAA.

Two Tigers went 4-for-4 in E.J. Ranel and Dillon Drexler. Ranel’s night included two doubles, a triple and two RBIs, while Drexler collected three RBIs. Nathaniel Howard also went 3-for-4.

Sean Fitzpatrick recorded the win with four innings of work with no earned runs, four hits and four strikeouts.

Grayson 10, Shiloh 8

LOGANVILLE — Grayson moved to 4-0 in Region 8-AAAAAA with a 10-8 win at home over Shiloh on Monday night. The win also pushed the Rams to 7-6 overall.

Cody Helton and Tyler Mitchell each sparked the offense with two-run hits, while Andrew Falgiano, Bryant Chandler and Colton Harrelson each finished with two hits.

Josh Brown notched the win in relief with 2 1/3 innings work, while Tyler Knight recorded the save.

Lanier 4, Johnson 3

GAINESVILLE — Bryan Gropp’s RBI single in the top of the sixth gave Lanier a one-run lead that would stand as the Longhorns came home 4-3 winners over Johnson in Region 8-AAAA on Monday night.

T.J. Richardson added an RBI double for the Longhorns (10-3, 4-0), while Kristoff Rietig (2-for-3, RBI) and Cam Coursey (2-for-2) each contributed at the plate.

Matthew Ramsay was the winning pitcher, delivering six innings with two earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts, while Tyler Tillman pitched the seventh with two strikeouts for the save.

Buford 9, North Hall 2

BUFORD — Austin Upshaw of Buford went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs on Monday night to lead the Wolves past North Hall 9-2 in Region 7-AAA action.

Joey Bart also drove in three runs and finished 1-for-3, while Bayne Miller (2-for-4, RBI) and Hunter Puckett (2-for-3) each had a solid night with the bat.

Kevin Coulter pitched four innings in recording the win, giving up two runs on two hits. Keyton Gibson followed and delivered three scoreless innings of relief with two hits allowed.

Buford improved to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the region.


Parkview 2, North 0

SUWANEE — Parkview won its second game in a row via shutout as the Panthers blanked North Gwinnett 2-0 on Monday night in a non-region match.

The Panthers (9-1, 4-1) received both of their goals from Emma Carlson.


Parkview 2, North 1

SUWANEE — Parkview defeated North Gwinnett 2-1 on Monday night in a non-region battle.

North (4-5) tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from Chad Yoon off an assist from Josh Hoeft before the Panthers pulled away.

Emmanuel Aguilar and Simon Nickerson scored the goals in the Parkview comeback.


Duluth 19, Norcross 7

DULUTH — Duluth reached the .500 mark at 5-5 with a 19-7 win at home over Norcross on Monday night.

The offense for Duluth was led by Grace Anderson with five goals and one assist and Shelby Martin with four goals and two assists.

Sam Gentry led the defense for the Wildcats with three ground balls and two forced turnovers, while keeper Emma Ford had five saves.

Norcross (3-4) received four goals from Jessee Hoge and three goals from Rachel Holmes, while keeper Meghan Touat was 18-for-36 in saves.

Mill Creek 20, Rockdale Co. 0

HOSCHTON — Mill Creek received at least one goal from 15 different players on Monday night as the Hawks crushed visiting Rockdale County 20-0 on Monday night.

Mill Creek improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in Area 4-AAAAAA.


North 18, Brookwood 3

SNELLVILLE — North extended its unbeaten record to 10-0 with an 18-3 win at Brookwood on Monday night.

Luke Printz led North with six goals, while Sam Gasta scored four. Aaron Hartz and Vinny Magro also logged two assists each in the win.


Yang’s 37 leads North over Collins Hill

LAWRENCEVILLE — Christina Yang of North Gwinnett led all golfers with a 37 on Monday afternoon as the Bulldogs eased past Collins Hill 159 to 173 at Collins Hill Golf Club.

Hebron’s Brooks wins in Athens

ATHENS — Reece Brooks of Hebron won her match against a competitor from Prince Avenue on Monday afternoon, topping her opponent by 10 strokes at Athens Country Club.


North beats Collins Hill by two strokes

LAWRENCEVILLE — North Gwinnett edged crosstown rival Collins Hill 174 to 176 on Monday afternoon at Collins Hill Golf Club.

Both squads had a player shoot 40 in Alex Simpson for Collins Hill and Bailey Ulp for North.

Dickinson and Clay lead Grayson over Brookwood

SNELLVILLE — Conner Dickinson and Mike Clay of Grayson each carded a 39 on Monday afternoon in helping the Rams to a 156 to 168 win over Brookwood at Summit Chase.

Shawn Chong of Brookwood had the low round of the day with 35.

Prince Avenue defeats Hebron

ATHENS — Sam Brannen of Prince Avenue finished with a 41 on Monday afternoon in leading his team to a 178 to 200 win against Hebron at Athens Country Club.

Hebron was led by a 47 from Ryan Bilancini.


Archer 5, Central 0

LAWRENCEVILLE — Michelle Samson, Nicole Samson and Kayla Gibson each won in singles play on Monday afternoon in helping Archer to a 5-0 sweep over Central Gwinnett at Rhodes Jordan Park.

Doubles winners for the Tigers (10-1, 6-1) were Kaitlyn Balsamides and Sydney Sorensen at No. 1 and Melissa Jackson and Jasmine Maultsby at No. 2.

Parkview 3, Norcross 2

NORCROSS — Ally Blake won at No. 1 singles and Savannah Larkin won at No. 3 singles, powering Parkview to a 3-2 win over Norcross in non-region tennis Monday.

The Panthers also got a point from the No. 1 doubles team of Abbie Nelms and Haley Keith.
