Movie: 3 1/2 stars

Disc: 3 stars

The fact that it was nominated for 10 Oscars and won none goes far in pointing out the polarizing effect of “American Hustle.” Based on the Abscam scandal of the ’70s, the film bears more than a passing resemblance to Martin Scorsese movies in general and particularly “GoodFellas.” Co-writer and director David O. Russell juggles style, plot and character development quite well and his use of period pop music is astonishing. Russell’s choice to include voice-over narration and an out-of-sequence narrative was stylistically brave but also made watching the movie a chore for many mainstream audience members.
