More than a dozen Gwinnett County players were recognized by the Atlanta Tipoff Club when it released its 2014 High School Basketball Award winners Wednesday.
Leading away were Greater Atlanta Christian boys forward Isaiah Wilkins and coach Eddie Martin, who were singled out for superlative honors.
Wilkins, a 6-foot-7 senior Virginia signee, was named the Metro Atlanta Boys Player of the Year, while Martin, who will lead Wilkins and the undefeated Spartans (31-0) into the Class AA state championship game against Calhoun on Friday in Macon, was named the Garland Pinholster Boys Coach of the Year for Class A-AAA.
Another GAC player, girls senior wing Brianna Cummings, was one of two Gwinnett players named to the Tipoff Club’s All-Metro Atlanta First Team, with Collins Hill’s Devin Mitchell being named to the boys first team. Former Mill Creek guard Jasmine Carter, now at St. Pius X, earned second-team girls honors.
The third-team All-Metro girls team was almost entirely made up of Gwinnett players, with Buford’s Camille Anderson being joined by Wesleyan’s Nikki McDonald, Duluth’s Katie Powell and Archer’s Amber Skidgel.
Meanwhile, the boys third team included North Gwinnett’s T.J. Howard and Buford duo Rakim Lubin and D’Marcus Simonds.
Gwinnett players earning honorable mention All-Metro selections include Norcross’ Sierra Butler, Wesleyan’s Mikayla Coombs, Central Gwinnett’s Alexandra Frazier, Parkview’s Victoria Harris and Genesis Perrymond, Buford’s Bree Horrocks and GAC’s Sydni Means for the girls, as well as Norcross’ Andre Chatfield and Central’s Shaun Jones for the boys.
