Gov. Nathan Deal gained some November competition in his race for a second term Wednesday, as the candidate qualifying period for 2014 elections continued in Georgia.

A day after Deal the first of two challengers expected in the May GOP primary filed paperwork to set up this year’s ballot, state Sen. Jason Carter qualified for the Democratic ballot in the gubernatorial race.

Carter is the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter.

“I’m running for governor because it’s time for leadership that puts people ahead of politics,” said Carter, who was joined by former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young when he filed his paperwork. “I’m running for governor because I want to make this state the same place of opportunity and growth for my two little boys that it has been for the previous generations of my family who have made Georgia their home.”

Locally, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson drew some competition in the Democratic primary, with Tom Brown filing papers to run against him.
