DULUTH — A 10-year-old Duluth girl witnessed her father kill her mother before stabbing himself in the chest, police said.
Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said officers responded to 825 Club Place at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, finding 32-year-old Marisol Rodriguez dead from stab wounds and Vicente Rivadeneira-Torres, her 36-year-old husband, with a knife protruding from his chest.
“The investigation revealed that the couple had a domestic dispute just prior to the stabbing,” Smith said. “The dispute escalated and Rivadeneira stabbed Rodriguez before turning the knife on himself.”
Police were alerted to the scene by the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, who had fled to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
“We believe she saw at least part of the attack going on before she went for help,” Smith said.
Rivadeneira-Torres was taken to the hospital in serious condition but is expected to survive. On Thursday, detectives secured arrest warrants charging him with felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and third-degree cruelty to children.
The father will remain under guard while hospitalized and be taken to the Gwinnett County jail upon his release, Smith said. His daughter is in the custody of relatives.
No further details were available Thursday.
