Fans of the movie “The Little Mermaid” will likely become fans of the musical “The Little Mermaid.”

“All the characters that you know and love from the movie are in the show,” said Jessica Grové, who plays the feisty red-headed mermaid Ariel. “It has all the songs you know and love from the film.”

And more.

There are additional songs and the musical elaborates on some of the characters’ back stories, including the sea witch Ursula, as well as Ariel’s love interest, the dashing Prince Eric.

“There’s some more character development in the musical that doesn’t happen in the movie,” Grové said.

There’s also lots of swimming — performers wear harnesses attached to two wires allowing them to float across the stage.

“It really is an effective method to make it look like the actors are swimming,” Grové said. “It’s really beautiful the way it works. (Audiences) can expect to be swept into this magical world. To escape for two-and-a-half hours and experience a lot of joy and fun.”

Grové said the musical is often the first theatrical experience for many children.

“I think it will stick with them for the rest of their lives,” she said. “It’s just such a great show for the entire family. People who are in their 30s grew up watching this film when it first came out and a lot of them have children who are at the age that are appropriate for the show.”

The Fox Theatre will be Grové’s sixth stop on the current tour and the show will run from July 8 through 13. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 404-881-2100 or visit foxtheatre.org.
