LAWRENCEVILLE — The Georgia Gwinnett College men’s tennis team, set to begin its first season eligible to compete for postseason championships, has set a new school record by being ranked fifth in the NAIA Men’s Tennis Coaches’ preseason top 25 poll.
The women also cracked the rankings at No. 20.
The Grizzlies men’s team took the top spot in their conference group, which is made up of teams from the Association of Independent Institutions, Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, Red River Athletic Conference and the Sooner Athletic Conference.
“We appreciate the respect shown from fellow NAIA and conference members,” GGC head coach Chase Hodges said. “Our men have produced solid results from the fall and we plan on carrying them over to the spring season.”
A strong individual fall season — in which the Grizzlies tackled some of the nation’s top programs at the NAIA and NCAA levels — contributed to the team’s preseason recognition.
GGC has three players in the ITA top 50 singles rankings and one pair in the top 25 doubles rankings, which were released in November based upon fall individual results.
All of Hodges’ top players from last year’s inaugural squad, which went 11-1, return again in 2014.
The women were picked third in their conference group and are the lone newcomer to the NAIA poll from the end of last season.
