Barrow fire department given car seat mini-grant

WINDER — The Barrow County fire department has received a “mini-grant” to help keep local children safe.

The department was named a recipient of the Georgia Department of Public Health’s car seat mini-grant, which helps provide car seats and education to financially eligible families across the state. In Barrow County, the two agencies educate parents and caregivers on how to properly install car and boosters seats, offer inspections and provide proper seats to those in need.

The Barrow County program has received numerous awards and “has over 300 children saved due to the program since it started” in 2003, officials said.

“It’s our responsibility to keep our children safe,” Lt. Scott Dakin said in a news release. “The car seat mini-grant is a great opportunity to help our community and help protect our kids from serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes.”

The Gwinnett County fire department’s Safe Kids Gwinnett program was also awarded the grant for 2014.
