CONYERS — The driver of the car that struck and killed a Conyers man riding a scooter last week has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the wreck.
The Georgia State Patrol reported that Careon Roberts, 22, of 4023 Arabian Way in Snellville, was arrested Tuesday and charged with first degree homicide by vehicle, DUI, following too closely, possession of open container in vehicle passenger area and safety belt violation.
The fatal wreck occurred around 4:30 a.m., Jan. 16, when the 2011 Nissan Versa driven by Roberts was traveling east on Old Covington Highway struck the rear of a scooter driven by 46-year-old Willie Raynard West.
“Both vehicles traveled off the north shoulder of the roadway. The Nissan struck several trees and overturned,” said Tracey Watson with the Department of Public Safety.
West died at the scene, she said.
A female passenger was in the Nissan, as well. According to authorities, she fled the scene after the wreck, running to a nearby home, banging on the door and windows. When Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the woman, they reported she was highly intoxicated. She has claimed she had been raped at a home in Gwinnett County. RCSO Investigator Michael Camp said the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is investigating those allegations.
