LAWRENCEVILLE — Still searching for the best way to fill the stands, the Gwinnett Braves altered their start times for many of their games for the second straight season.
G-Braves games played Monday through Thursday will now begin at 6:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday games will stay at 7 p.m. and all Sunday games will begin at 2:05 p.m.
For the first four seasons, the G-Braves played all weekday and weekend night games at 7 p.m., but last year they started most Monday through Thursday games at 6 p.m. with the hopes of enticing fans with the ability to see the end of a game and still be home early enough for children and parents to sleep. The 6 p.m. start drew opposite criticism, people struggled to arrive early enough without missing too many of the early innings.
“Everything we do is a process, we are trying to figure out that perfect Monday through Thursday start time,” G-Braves general manager North Johnson said. “We are hoping 6:30 p.m. is going to be that time. It’s just one of those things that’s a process of trying to find something that will be the best fit.”
The Sunday start time is only a slight change. The past two seasons Sunday games during the summer began at 5 p.m. with the hope of cooler temperatures, but Johnson said ticket sales plateaued regardless of the time of first pitch.
“We gave it a two-year try,” Johnson said. “Frankly, the players prefer having one day game during a homestand. Most of the teams use it as a get-a-way. There were a number of factors.
“Hopefully, all of these things will play out to make it easier for fans to come out and see games during the week.”
