WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Archer dominates Sham Slam

MOUNT AIRY — Archer had nine wrestlers in the finals to win the Sham Slam on Saturday at Haberhsam Central.

The Tigers scored 307 points to beat a host of the top teams in the state. Class AA power Jefferson was second with 197 points, followed by Commerce (166), Collins Hill (163.5) and Gilmer (158). Class AAA dual state champion Buford was seventh.

The Tigers had 12 tournament placers, including champions Sam Bullard, Daniel Bullard, Thomas Bullard and M.J. Couzan.

Sophomore Chris Diaz lost to Collins Hill’s two-time state champion Ryan Millhof in overtime of the finals, while Vinny Artigues, Quinn Miller, Garrett Miller and Jacob Lill were second. Elliott Lee was third, while Gio Fernandez and Alex Standridge were sixth.

Collins Hill’s Codi Russell (113), Sean Russell (120) and Millhof (126) were tournament champions. Griffin Riley and Aubrey Johnson were third and Michael Roquet was fourth.

Buford’s Rudy Guillen and Chip Ness were tournament champions. Darius Bunch and Jack Barber placed fourth and Eli Hartley and Trent Ferguson were sixth.

North Gwinnett’s Hunter Franklin (132) was second and Todd Small (106) was fourth. Grayson’s Javaughn Anderson was sixth.

Bears take third at Johns Creek tourney

JOHNS CREEK — Mountain View’s varsity team finished third out of 12 teams in the Johns Creek Duals on Saturday. The Bears also entered their JV squad in the tournament and they took third.

Mountain View’s varsity improved to 29-7 on the season, beating Northwest Whitfield 51-25, Centennial 57-16, Paulding County 54-18, Hiram 55-18 and losing to North Forsyth 46-24. North Forsyth was fourth at the Class AAAAAA state duals.

The Bears had five wrestlers go 5-0, led by Justin George (120 pounds), Adam Flatt (126), D.J. Schrenk (145), Austin Brown (170) and Richie Ramos (195).

Alonso Reyes (132), Jesse FitzGerald (145) and Octavian Jarda (182) were 4-1, while Eric Montalvo (182), Bryce Coleman (220) and Jared Gee (220) were 3-1.

Mountain View’s JV defeated Riverside Military Academy 38-36, South Gwinnett 42-30 and Pace 37-36 and lost to Northwest Whitfield 48-26 and to Johns Creek 41-36.

GAC third at Prep Slam

ATLANTA — Greater Atlanta Christian School was the top Georgia team at the Prep Slam on Saturday at Holy Innocents’, placing sixth out of 35 teams.

D.J. Coker was fifth at 285 pounds, while Gunner Nelson (195) and Mitchell Shey (220) were sixth.
