Gladiators trade Guimond out West

DULUTH — The Gwinnett Gladiators swapped defensemen with Ontario on Tuesday, sending Sacha Guimond to the Reign in exchange for Matt Clune.

Clune, 24, has proven to be a dependable blueliner for Ontario the past two seasons. In 31 games this season, Clune has a goal and four assists, going along with a plus-4 rating and 66 penalty minutes. Last season, the Toronto native had two goals and 13 assists in 69 games and a plus-24 rating.

Prior to his time with the Reign, Clune spent four years at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. In his 140 games as a Crusader, he had 14 goals and 39 assists, with 186 penalty minutes and was a plus-33.

Clune’s older brother, Richard, is a forward for the Nashville Predators.

Guimond, 22, played in 28 games with the Gladiators this season, with a goal and five assists. He also was a minus-14, last among Gwinnett defensemen.

After a strong offensive year with the Gladiators and San Francisco Bulls last season, Guimond was named the 2012-13 ECHL Defenseman of the Year.
