Collins Hill’s football team won a share of the Region 7-AAAAAA championship this season with Norcross and North Gwinnett.
Many of the stars of the Eagles’ state semifinal team are still making their college decisions.
“We don’t have a bunch of Division I kids,” Collins Hill head coach Kevin Reach said. “But we do have a few that will play in college.”
Running back Tyler Henderson, the Daily Post’s Offensive Player of the Year, recently picked up an offer Georgia State to go along with offers from Old Dominion and Middle Tennessee.
Quarterback Tyler Herman led the county in passing and has an offer from West Georgia.
Two of Herman’s leading receivers — Grant McDonald and Quentin Jones — have also picked up scholarship offers. Jones has offers from Lehigh and Virginia Military and McDonald has an offer from Stetson.
Defensive back Rhyan England led the county in interceptions and recently picked up an offer from Army. He also has offers from Georgia Southern and West Georgia. Defensive back Ari Benoit has an offer from Shorter.
Linebacker Jonathan Thomas began the season without any college scholarship offers. After posting 64 tackles and 7.5 sacks, he has offers from Oklahoma, Syracuse and Cincinnati.
Offensive lineman Christian Harris is headed to Duke and is the Eagles’ only committed player. National Signing Day is on Feb. 5.
Collins Hill’s largest signing class was in 2012 when 10 players inked scholarships on National Signing Day.
Buford adds five commitments
Defending Class AAA state champion Buford added five college commitments over the last few weeks.
Quarterback Taylor Mitchell, who threw for 901 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception, is headed to Davidson.
Defensive end Donte Gordon was fourth in the county in sacks with nine and is committed to Wofford. Defensive back/receiver Terrance Wilson is headed to Buffalo, offensive lineman Harrison Morgan is going to West Georgia and tight end Cam Poole is going to Dartmouth.
Deion King (Princeton), Korie Rogers (Clemson) and Thomas Wilson (Missouri) have also made college commitments.
Archer lineman focused on wrestling
M.J. Couzan’s future is in football, but the Archer senior offensive lineman is focused on wrestling right now. The defending heavyweight state champion has a pair of college offers, but is focused on helping his team to another traditional state championship next month.
“Wrestling is the most important thing right now,” Couzan said.
The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Couzan plans to take a visit to West Georgia and has an offer from Tennessee State. He was a second-team all-county selection by the Daily Post.
Louisville’s Petrino not
welcomed at South
Bobby Petrino took the head coaching job at Louisville last week, but South Gwinnett head coach John Small is not welcoming him back to the Snellville school.
“He shouldn’t spend a dime coming back to our school no matter where he is” Small said.
Before taking the job at Louisville, Petrino was the head coach at Western Kentucky and pulled the scholarship of Comets offensive lineman Dennis Edwards. The 6-foot-2, 305-pound Edwards committed to the program in August.
“I wouldn’t want him to come back to our school while I’m here. That’s bad business,” Small said.
Colleges pulling scholarships from players is nothing new in the recruiting world. Oftentimes it doesn’t go public, but Small wanted to let other coaches know about the situation to protect their players.
“I think it happens all the time. It doesn’t go very public,” Small said. “You do it in Gwinnett County and 22 other schools are going to take notice. You can’t do that kind of stuff. Some of them have no regard for young people. It’s all about them. Our job is to protect our kids.”
