Christmas tree recycling program ends this week

If you’re looking to recycle your live Christmas tree for parks and trails in Gwinnett County, this week is your last chance.

Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful’s “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling program, in its 30th year, is underway at locations across Gwinnett. The program began in 1984 as a partnership between Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful, local governments, Georgia Power and Jackson EMC to reduce the illegal dumping of trees on roadsides. Trees will be accepted through Friday.

Unadorned live trees will be converted into mulch that will be used for walking trails and to beautify Gwinnett parks.

For the last nine years, Gwinnettians have recycled the most trees in the state, and Gwinnettians recycle one of out every six trees in the state.

GCB officials have said the average Christmas tree weighs 20 pounds and fills up almost as much landfill space as a washing machine.

The “Bring One for the Chipper” event is also looking for volunteers for the recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 25 at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville, near the soccer fields. Volunteers will aid in chipping recycled Christmas trees into mulch. GCB officials recommend that volunteers bring gloves and wear long pants, thick closed-toe shoes and warm layers.

Volunteers must be 14 years or older, and must arrive with a signed volunteer release form in hand in order to take part in the event. Business groups, church groups, civic organizations, neighborhood associations and school clubs of four or more participants are also welcome to take part in this event.
