Man killed, officer injured in Lawrenceville area shootout

A man was killed and a police officer was injured during an exchange of gunfire in unincorporated Lawrenceville Saturday.

Not long after a report of a stabbing a half-mile away, officers responded to a burglary call at a Smokemist Trace home, near Pleasant Hill Road at around 4 p.m., Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington said.

While the homeowners waited outside, the police officer and a man exchanged fire, with the officer being struck in the ankle, Washington said. Investigators are looking into the circumstances of the shooting, while the officer is treated at a local hospital, he added.

Washington confirmed that that the case is related to the stabbing, which occurred on Willowwood Way, in the same neighborhood off of Club Drive. According to witnesses, the suspect attended a party at the Willowwood Way address, and at some point the victim was stabbed and the suspect fled, ending up at the home on Smokemist Trace.

Washington said that when two officers arrived at Smokemist Trace, they noticed the front door kicked in. While checking the residence they encountered the suspect and shots were fired. The suspect died at the scene, Washington said.

The victim of the stabbing is in stable condition, Washington said. With the investigation ongoing, none of the people involved in either case have been identified, including the officer.
