NORCROSS — Dacula attacks from everywhere.
In the Dacula Middle School boys basketball team's 65-26 win over Creekland on Monday, the Falcons dominated from all over the floor.
With the Gwinnett County Western Division championship in place, Dacula now faces Bay Creek for the county championship.
“When you see the schedule the goal is to always win it all,” Dacula head coach Jason Thomas said. “It’s time to finish it.”
Ten different players scored, six scored more than five points each. They forced more than 10 first-half turnovers. In the first half, they pulled away with runs of 12-3 and 8-4.
“We can go 7 to 8 deep,” Thomas said. “Everyone is selfless.”
The selflessness showed in how the points piled up. Dacula scored points of forced turnovers in transition, it scored near the rim not just from its forwards and center, but from its slashing point guards. In its third quarter run to seal the game, almost every basket, save a Kenny Sevier 3-pointer as time expired, came near the rim or at the free-throw line.
Dacula closed out the first half scoring 12 of the final 17 points. The Falcons got seven points from all-county selection Shayne Buckingham, six more from Arusha Hunter and four from Mekhail Bethea. Hunter and Buckingham each finished with game-high 15 points, but it was Buckingham who arrived in the second half with Dacula leading 29-14.
The forward showed his prowess in the paint, making most of his shots off of layups or close-range jump shots. He scored six more points in the third quarter, as Dacula separated itself from Creekland, building a 50-24 point lead.
“Shayne is a dominant player,” Thomas said. “He’s an automatic option.”
Along with Buckingham and Hunter Michael Burrell scatter his eight points in throughout the game and Reggie Horton scored seven.
Justin Lee led the way for Creekland with eight points and Eric Gonzalez scored five, including a 3-pointer.
