Memorial services set for Collins Hill grad killed in Valdosta

Memorial services will be held Wednesday for the Collins Hill High School graduate killed in a pedestrian accident in Valdosta.

Lizzie Lohmar, 21, passed away early Saturday morning, nearly three days after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing a street in Valdosta. A senior on the Valdosta State University soccer team, Lohmar was a multi-sport athlete and 2010 graduate at Collins Hill.

The driver that struck her, 21-year-old Michael Laslie, was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Visitation was scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Carson McLane Funeral Home. A requiem mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 800 Gornto Road, Valdosta.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Elizabeth Joy Johmar Scholarship Fund for Mathematics, case of VSU Foundation, 1500 North Patterson St., Valdosta, Ga., 31698. Condolences can be left online at mclanecares.com.

According to an obituary, Lohmar was a mathematics major and treasurer of the local chapter of the Mathematical Association of America. She was an active member of the Phi Mu sorority and, in addition to playing college soccer, was a volunteer coach at Hahira Middle School.

Lohmar is survived by her parents, brother, sister and fiance.
