As weather threatens, officials begin to announce closings

With the potential of a “catastropic” ice storm on the way, state and local leaders are preparing for another to battle another bout of winter weather.

Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for 45 Georgia counties, including Gwinnett, explaining that forecasters not only expect rain, sleet and snow that could cause problems overnight Monday but another wave of potentially icy weather Tuesday night.

“The next three days are going to be challenging days,” Deal said during a Monday press conference. “We want to make sure we are as prepared as possible.”

The Governor asked people to “use good judgment” when venturing out onto the roads, as crews had problems treating icy spots last month due to the traffic stuck on the interstate.

Georgia Power officials said they have called in crews from other states to help, as ice falling onto power lines is a big danger in the conditions expected.
