HOSCHTON – Gwinnett County schools took home seven individual wrestling titles from Saturday’s Class AAAAAA West Sectional hosted at Mill Creek and the table appears to be set for more of the same this coming week when the state tournament gets underway.
In all, Gwinnett County schools put 13 wrestlers into the 14 finals’ matches, including three that pitted fellow Area 7-AAAAAA wrestlers going against each other for the championship.
The top eight wrestlers from each sectional advance to this week’s state tournament, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Collins Hill led the way with four titles as Codi Russell (113 pounds), Sean Russell (120), Ryan Milhof (126) and Michael Roquet (145) marched into their respective title matches and took home victories.
Codi Russell picked up a 7-4 decision over Aslan Kilic of Wheeler by rallying after being down 3-2 while Sean Russell was dominant in his 22-10 major decision win over Mountain View’s Adam Flatt by leading throughout and pulling away at the end.
Milhof was also solid after winning by technical fall (22-7) over Meadowcreek’s Raymond Washington and Roquet completed the four-win day for the Eagles by getting a 9-3 decision over Henrio Thelemaque of Kennesaw Mountain.
“It feels good because I had a tough sectional last year and got upset in the finals by someone I had beaten before,” said Roquet. “But this year I’ve had some great practice partners and they’ve help me step up my game. With the help of them and the coaches, I was able to pull this off and it feels fantastic.”
North Gwinnett’s Hunter Franklin captured the title at 132 pounds in one of the day’s best matches when he rallied late against Collins Hill’s Griffin Riley to take a 4-3 decision.
Franklin led early at 2-0, but fell behind 3-2 before picking up a pair of points with only 10 seconds remaining in the match for the one-point win.
“It’s awesome because it sets me up well for next week,” said Franklin.
“(Riley) beat me last week (at the area tournament), so it was great to come back and get back on top today. I knew going out there today that it was going to a tough six-minute match. I knew time was running down and I had to hit one big move, which I did.”
Meadowcreek’s Ryan Moore was tough down the stretch when he pulled out a 4-3 decision at 195 pounds when he held off Marietta’s Isaiah Bourne for the victory.
“It feels great right now and I’m going to bask in the moment for now,” said Moore. “But I’ll have to come back and get ready for next week. This was a tough match today (against Bourne) and I didn’t know much about him. But every match will be tough now and I just have to be ready.”
Finally, Mill Creek’s Bobby Klemm waited all day for his match at 285 pounds, but needed just 1:24 to pin Quinzavious Sands of Douglas County for the win.
Wrestling in the final match of the two-day tournament, Klemm also had to endure the match at 220 pounds that went into double overtime before a decision was reached.
“I was nervous,” said Klemm about the extended wait before his match. “I had never wrestled (Sands) before, at least in this year, so I had to sit around and wait. But once I got into the match, I thought I could take him down and it worked from there. It feels great, because I was eighth at sectionals last year and it’s a big step up to win it this year.”
In other action featuring Gwinnett wrestlers in championship matches, North’s Todd Small dropped a 7-2 decision to Habersham Central’s Andrew Burpee at 106, Mill Creek’s Marcos Rosenkier came up short in a 10-5 decision to Walton’s Jacob Murphy at 138 and Meadowcreek’s Adeniyi Henderson lost in a 7-4 decision to Roswell’s Demarco Gatti at 152.
VALDOSTA — Archer went a perfect 8-0 in championship matches as the Tigers produced eight individual titles at the Class AAAAAA East Sectional on Saturday.
Chris Diaz (126) took a 4-0 decision over Reginald Dennis of Valdosta, Grant Aycox (132) captured an 8-1 decision over Grayson’s Javaughn Anderson and Sam Bullard (138) edged Camden County’s Elo Roberson 9-7 for Archer’s first three titles of the day.
Thomas Bullard (152) kept it going for Archer by getting a pin of Ethan Castaneda of Berkmar while Daniel Bullard (160) took a 7-2 decision over Matthew Moody of Lowndes.
Quinn Miller (182) followed up with a technical fall (16-0) over Stephen Solaman of Brookwood, Elliott Lee (195) pinned Chattahoochee’s Sean Hoffman and M.J. Couzan (285) also got a pin against Tift County’s Jesse Snow to complete the title run for the Tigers.
