Pedestrian killed crossing U.S. 78 near Stone Mountain

STONE MOUNTAIN — A Lilburn man was killed Wednesday night trying to cross U.S. Highway 78 on foot.

Gwinnett County police said 29-year-old Neal Patel attempted to cross the busy highway from Glenn Club Drive — not far from E. Park Place Boulevard and surrounding shopping centers — at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. Patel “stepped in front of the path” of an Acura Integra and was struck by the vehicle, Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

Patel died at the scene.

“Investigators have determined that alcohol and speed aren’t contributing causes in this accident,” Ritter said. “There are no charges pending and this investigation continues.”
