PREP ROUNDUP: Lanier's Smith scores 23 in win

TOCCOA — Spurring the Longhorns with 23 of their 45 points, Peyton Smith insured a Lanier win at Stephens County, 45-38.

Smith hit 13 of his 14 free throws and scored 18 of his game-high points in the second half for the Longhorns (11-10, 4-1 8-AAAA). Paul Webb added eight points and 10 rebounds for Lanier.

Boys basketball

Berkmar 61, Archer 32

LAWRENCEVILLE — Four Patriots scored in double figures in Berkmar’s 61-32 win over overmatched Archer.

Tim Rowe led Berkmar (18-5, 12-2 8-AAAAAA) with 14 points and eight rebounds. Al Durham and Jonathan Sanks each scored 11 and Josh Culver added 10 points.

North Gwinnett 66, Peachtree Ridge 58 OT

SUWANEE — Owen Lewis dominated much of the game, including overtime, as North Gwinnett slipped past Peachtree Ridge 66-58 in a make-up game following Tuesday’s cancellation.

Lewis recorded a double-doubled for the Bulldogs (21-3, 14-1 7-AAAAAA), scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the win. T.J. Howard scored 15 points and Malik Carter added 14 for North Gwinnett.

Amir Warnock led Peachtree Ridge (10-13, 7-7 7-AAAAAA) with 20 points, Deangelo Gibbs scored 13 and Aaron Augustin finished with 11 points and eight assists.

Mill Creek 60, Collins Hill 57

SUWANEE — Scotty Chadwick led Mill Creek with 15 points and the Hawks held off Collins Hill for a 60-57 win.

Keetone Glover scored 13 points and Sha Pawell added 12 for Mill Creek (5-9 7-AAAAAA). Also for the Hawks, Miles Riley had seven steals, six rebounds and six points.

Devin Mitchell scored 24 for Collins Hill.

Brookwood 58, Grayson 55

LOGANVILLE — Led by a game-high 26 from Kendall Joseph, Brookwood came away with a narrow Region 8-AAAAAA win, beating Grayson 58-55.

Deion Dedeaux added 10 points for the Broncos (12-11, 6-8 region) who saw nine different players score in the win.

Grayson’s Marquis Lanier scored 25 points.

Central Gwinnett 77, Parkview 50

LAWRENCEVILLE —Senior Khalil Ozuna led Central Gwinnett with 16 points and fellow senior Shaun Jones added nine points in the Black Knights’ 77-50 win over Parkview.

Karon Jackson added 11 points for Central (14-9, 7-7 8-AAAAAA).

Buford 69, Morgan County 58

BUFORD — Two Buford players came away with double-doubles and the Wolves extended their winning streak to 11 games with a 69-58 win over Morgan County.

D'Marcus Simonds scored 29 points to go with his 12 rebounds and Rakim Lubin scored 18 and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wolves (17-5).

Apalachee 82, Monroe Area 45

MONROE — Led by 25 points from Kamar Baldwin, Apalachee cruised past Monroe Area 82-45 on Saturday.

The Wildcats dominated from the start, taking a 52-15 lead into halftime. Joey German added 15 points and Kent Knowles scored 14 for the Wildcats (19-3).

Girls basketball

Archer 74, Berkmar 42

LAWRENCEVILLE — Linsey Marchese led the Tigers with 25 points and nine rebounds as Archer cruised past Berkmar 74-42.

Kayla Rogers hit six 3s for the Tigers on her way to 18 points. Autumn Newby had five assists and six rebounds and Madison Newby had eight assists for Archer (21-3, 14-1 8-AAAAAA).

Brittany Taylor led the Patriots with 14 points.

Grayson 61, Brookwood 52

LOGANVILLE — Grayson led wire-to-wire, keeping mostly a double-digit lead before finishing off Brookwood 61-52 on Saturday.

Imani Conner led the Rams (9-13, 3-10 8-AAAAAA) with 16 points and Jessica Ewing put together a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lika Bah scored nine for Grayson.

For Brookwood, Taryn Dennie scored 18 points and Erika Allen scored 10 points.

North Gwinnett 52, Peachtree Ridge 50

SUWANEE — Stephanie Amichia scored 11 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead North Gwinnett past Peachtree Ridge 52-50.

Josh Belcher added 13 points and Jessica Belcher chipped in 10 for the Bulldogs (12-10,8-7 7-AAAAAA).

For Peachtree Ridge (10-12, 6-8 7-AAAAAA), Lorrie Cruse scored 21 points, Kendra Purifoye scored 13 and Justina Young added 11.

Mill Creek 58, Collins Hill 42

SUWANEE —Meredith Schulte scored 23 points and added nine rebounds and nine steals in Mill Creek’s 58-42 win over Collins Hill.

Tatum Ragsdale added 13 points and Shannon McCrosson dished out six assists for Mill Creek (17-6, 9-5 7-AAAAAA).

For Collins Hill (11-11, 4-9), Kyra Dixon scored 16 points, nine rebounds and five steals and Marissa Bayer added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Parkview 49, Central Gwinnett 33

LAWRENCEVILLE — Parkview’s Raven Johnson and Central Gwinnett’s Alex Frazier matched each other with 13 points, but it was Johnson’s Panthers who pulled away for a 49-33 win.

Vickie Harris added eight points for the Panthers (21-2, 13-1 8-AAAAAA).

Habersham 53, Meadowcreek 50

MT. AIRY— Kortni Hill scored 23 of Meadowcreek’s 50 points, but the Mustangs fell 53-50 at Habersham Central.

Laney Gosnell led the way for the Raiders with 32.

Buford 57, Morgan County 49

BUFORD — Trailing by 10 points at halftime and five after three quarters, Buford rallied in the fourth quarter Saturday for a 57-49 win over Morgan County.

The Wolves (20-2) were led by 17 points from Camille Anderson and 15 points from Tara Dambach. Bree Horrocks added 12 points.


GAC sends 13 to sectionals

NORCROSS — Justin Van Leeuwen and D.J. Coker each claimed area crowns and were two of 13 Spartans to qualify for secionals at the Area 6-AA traditional wrestling championships.

Van Leeuwan won at 106-pounds and Coker won at 285, leading the Spartans to a third-place finish with 216 points. Social Circle (240.5) finished second and Jefferson (286) continued its wrestling dominance with another area title.

Finishing second for GAC were Hunter Hemmings (113), Aiden Jarrett (182) and Gunnar Nelson (195). Wyatt Vaughn (126), Kyle Politz (132), Emeritus Morris (138), Josh Snyder (145) and Mitchell Shea (220) all took third. Zak Dean (152), Thomas Lord (160) and Hunter McKernan (160) all finished fourth.

Lanier fourth in 8-AAAA

SUGAR HILL — Jeremy Taylor (195) and Grey Williams (152) both claimed Area 8-AAAA wrestling crowns Saturday helping Lanier to a fourth place team finish.

Zack Garner (170) finished second, Jacob Ogi (160) took third and Josue Martinez (126) took fourth to qualify for sectionals.
