LAWRENCEVILLE — Georgia Gwinnett (3-0) posted a pair of come-from-behind victories to win both ends of a doubleheader and sweep its season-opening series against Shawnee State (0-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville.
The Grizzlies trailed after the seventh inning in all three games in the series, but strung together a trio of comeback victories for the sweep.
Senior outfielder Jake Fields paced the Grizzly offense with five base hits on the day, scoring three runs and supplying a pair of stolen bases.
In the first game, Ty Abbott came through with a two-out walk-off single to lift GGC over SSU, 4-3, in Saturday’s opener.
Georgia Gwinnett trailed by a run entering the bottom of the ninth, but scored two runs to mount the comeback victory. Christian Van Camp led off the inning with a triple and tied the game on an RBI single by Garitt Church. Church then came across to score the winning run on the single by Abbott.
In the second game, trailing by a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Van Camp delivered a two-run go-ahead double over the head of the right fielder to score Fields and pinch runner Kyle Norton.
Alvord then provided three insurance runs on a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the eighth inning. Alvord had a pair of hits and Fields added three singles for the Grizzlies.
Ryan Turner (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen by pitching 2.0 innings of relief. Jonathan Spitler picked up his first save of the season by recording the last out of the contest.
GGC starter Alex Roberts did not allow a hit in his GGC debut until a double in the top of the fourth inning and struck out seven batters. He gave up one run on two hits in 5.2 innings pitched in the no-decision.
The Grizzlies started the game with a run in the first inning. Abbott led off with a double down the left field line. The next two batters walked to load the bases and Phillip Bates drove home Abbott with a bunt single.
In the top of the second, Shawnee State took advantage of a pair of walks, a passed ball and a GGC fielding error to score two runs without a hit in the top of the second.
Georgia Gwinnett notched the game at two runs a side in the sixth when Fields singled, stole second and scored on a single by Sloan Strickland.
In the top of the seventh, SSU drew a bases-loaded walk to briefly take a 3-2 edge before the Grizzlies scored two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to seal the victory.
Up next for the Grizzlies is a three-game series against Southern Poly. The two teams will play in Lawrenceville on Friday and Sunday and will travel to Marietta in between on Saturday.
